Field Trip Overview
Gettysburg, a name that resonates in American history, is long associated with one of the most famous battles of the American Civil War and, perhaps, the greatest speech in American history.  Literally millions of visitors have visited the field that commemorates the beginning of the end of a political rift that led to the bloodiest conflict on American soil.  Few are aware, however, that the Mid-Atlantic region, an area that encompasses both the avenues of approach both armies used and Gettysburg, was also the scene of major geologic rifting that directly influenced the battle.  This one-day course will provide an overview of current geologic studies on rifting and discuss how its influence impacted on the outcome of the battle.

We will examine the five periods of rifting that occurred in the Mid-Atlantic Region of the Eastern United States. Our day long bus tour of the battlefield will include stops were we will discuss the geology of the site, and examine how the terrain influenced the decisions of the commanders and ultimately the outcome of specific military actions.

This field trip is intended to introduce attendees to the influence of geology upon the Gettysburg Campaign and, in particular, the role terrain played in the battle of Gettysburg.
