Instructors:

  • Don A. Lundy, Ph.D., P.G., Principal Hydrogeologist (Groundwater & Environmental Services, Inc.)
  • Christopher Mulry, P.G., Vice President (Groundwater & Environmental Services, Inc.)
  • Derek W. Tomlinson, MASc, PE, PEng (Geosyntec Consultants, Inc.)
  • Pamela S. Trowbridge, P.G. (Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection)

Objective: This course will provide site remediation professionals, including PA Professional Geologists (PGs) and NJ Licensed Site Remediation Professionals (LSRPs), with a sound basis for understanding the basic concepts and innovative technologies currently being used for assessment and cleanup at light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL) contaminated sites.

Description: The instructors will introduce the saturation profile model paradigm for LNAPL and how it is changing the way we investigate, remediate, and regulate sites with LNAPL impacts. The course will elaborate on basic concepts and terminology, understanding the saturation profile model, soil and fluid properties that control the air/oil/water fluid saturations and mobility, effects of water-table fluctuations (e.g., smear zone creation), and parameters that control plume migration and stability.

The course is structured so that a thorough review of the conceptual basis will be presented followed by tools for characterizing sites and case study examples. Along with a basic understanding of the principles behind the LNAPL conceptual site model (LCSM) and remediation of an LNAPL plume, specific examples of LNAPL site investigations and various remedial technologies will be presented. This course will help environmental professionals:

  • Prepare LNAPL conceptual site models,
  • Design LNAPL site investigations,
  • Evaluate available LNAPL remedial technologies,
  • Implement the best risk-based alternative to achieve remedial goals, and
  • Evaluate progress and success of cleanup.
