Webinar Overview:  SCS geologists from across the nation, alongside a Professional Geologist from the Pennsylvania Geological Survey, will kick off the webinar with a comprehensive technical introduction to Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS), focusing on the geology underpinning these technologies.

They will then delve into the specifics of a current, complex CCUS injection project being carried out in California by SCS, providing insights into its execution.

The session will conclude with an exploration of potential CCUS projects in Pennsylvania, informed by data gathered and analyzed by the Geological Survey and funded by various Department of Energy (DOE) grants, highlighting projects that are particularly well-suited for the state's geology. This webinar marks the first installment of a two-part series aimed at offering a broad overview of CCUS projects. The subsequent session, scheduled for Fall 2024, will delve deeper into the technical considerations involved in site selection, CO2 capture, drilling of injection wells, ongoing monitoring protocols, and the economic structure supporting CCUS initiatives.

Projected Outcomes: Participants will have a greater understanding of CCUS, how projects in different areas of the country are being designed, permitted, and carried out and what might be in store for Pennsylvania given it’s complex geology.

About our presenters

Charles Hostetler, Ph.D., brings over four decades of experience to the table as a project manager and expert in geochemistry, hydrogeology, risk evaluation, environmental legislation, and natural resource assessments. His work spans several sectors, including carbon capture, coal combustion byproducts, solid waste management, manufacturing, mining, nuclear waste, and government projects, with key strengths in project oversight, groundwater modeling, and comprehensive environmental monitoring.

David Palmerton, P.G., possesses a wealth of knowledge from over 35 years in environmental consulting, focusing on evaluating environmental liabilities, conducting investigations, and overseeing remediation projects. His expertise extends to the energy sector, especially in upstream oil and gas operations, drilling activities, oilfield decommissioning, and well plugging. Palmerton holds professional geologist licenses in several states and has previously been a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager.

Gary Vancil, Jr., serves as the Project Director for SCS Engineers' Carbon Sequestration and Deep Well Injection division. With degrees in Geosciences from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, his early career was devoted to resource development and extraction at the nation’s largest privately owned coal company. Since joining SCS in 2021, Vancil has led projects on deep well CO2 sequestration and underground mining investigations. He is currently managing a cross-functional team for the development and submission of a Class VI permit for a major CO2 sequestration project in California.

Christina Helms, P.G., in her role as Project Manager, spearheads the growth and management of SCS’s environmental services in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. With 18 years of experience in environmental consulting as a geologist, Helms has taken on roles such as project manager, senior technical advisor, and Licensed Site Remediation Professional on a variety of environmental projects for private sector clients across commercial real estate, residential housing, industrial, mining, and energy sectors.

Michele Cooney, P.G. (PA Geologic Survey) - Michele Cooney, Chief of the Subsurface and Petroleum Geology Section of the Pennsylvania Geological Survey has over a decade of experience in oil and gas and CCUS research. A former environmental consultant, she has since focused her career on reservoir and seal characterization of subsurface reservoirs and has participated in projects including the Midwest Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership (MRCSP), the Midwest Regional Carbon Initiative (MRCI), the Utica Shale Consortium, and the Central Appalachian Partnership for Carbon Storage Deployment (CAP).
