Overview
Whether remediation, redevelopment or resource management, soils are an integral part of the solutions provided by Professional Geologists, Engineers and environmental professionals. A better understanding of soils helps prepare us to manage environmental risk and protect public health and safety. This one-day course will provide an overview of the current state of soil science and its application to stormwater management, on-lot sewage disposal, solid waste disposal, Brownfield development, urban revitalization, agriculture, nutrient management, and mineral exploration, restoration and geotechnical applications.
Course Description
We will explore the history of soil science and soil basics (i.e. texture, structure, permeability), then focus on the details of the types of soil classifications and taxonomy, published sources of data and the interdisciplinary components, soil genesis and its application, soil management across the spectrum of uses, paleosols and anthropogenic soils and their impacts to various investigations. Methods of soil investigation will be explored including permeability testing, test interpretation, and drainage classification. Special cases such as acid sulfate soils, sodic soils, hydrophobic soils and volcanic soils and their relationships to the soils of Pennsylvania. Emphasis will be given to practical field methodologies and applications to meet current issues and regulatory requirements (i.e. Soil horizon restoration and reconstruction). Case studies and examples from the real world will be utilized to place the science in context with practice. Emerging topics such as urban soils will be discussed.
Who should attend
This seminar is intended both for those who have and do not have backgrounds in soil science. It is aimed at practicing geologists, regulators, engineers, public officials and environmental professionals either in need of a refresher course or those who are learning about soils for the first time.
Our Instructors
Russell L. Losco, P.G., C.P.S.S., Lanchester Soil Consultants, Inc. - Mr. Losco has over 25 years' experience in soil science. He is a Certified Professional Soil Scientist, a Professional Geologist and an adjunct professor at Delaware County Community College. He served for nine years on the Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania Association of Professional Soil Scientists (PAPSS) and is the lead author of the PAPSS Manual for Soil Investigation in Pennsylvania and a number of other scientific publications. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania Stormwater Technical Workgroup (PaSTW). Since 2010 he has been working in cooperation with the US Environmental Protection Agency on targeted urban soil surveys of Cleveland and Cincinnati, Ohio and Omaha, Nebraska. He is an Associate Editor and frequent contributor to the journal Soil Survey Horizons, where he is notorious for over-using commas.
Gary M. B. Kribbs, P.G. - President and Principal Geologist, AEON Geoscience. Inc. - Mr. Kribbs received a B.A. in geology and an M.S. in geology (structural focus) from the University of Toledo. Mr. Kribbs is a structural geologist & hydrogeologist with over 30 years of experience. This experience includes slope stability investigations on numerous public and private developments. Mr. Kribbs has extensive experience with large subsurface investigation projects dealing with engineers and soils scientists and biologists throughout Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Delaware and Texas. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Pennsylvania Stormwater Technical Workgroup (PaSTW). Currently active board member of PCPG and historically from 2001 through 2007, President elect from 2004 and 2005, President 2006 and 2007, and Past-President 2008. Currently an adjunct professor at LaSalle University teaching Hydrogeology and Structural Geology.
